We have a socialist retirement system. We have a socialist health care system for the elderly. We have automobile and aviation companies on the verge of bankruptcy or government ownership due to legislation and regulation in oil prices that could be half of what they are if Congress got out of the way. Look at me. The problem with General Motors and Ford and Chrysler and domestic auto manufacturers is not that they don’t know how to run their business. They are all kicking butt internationally. Ford, General Motors are selling cars out the wazoo internationally. You know what they don’t face? The same kind of onerous regulation they have here. You want to fix the Ford auto industry, General Motors, local, domestic auto industry, just get rid of the CAFE standards. The thought that people that run the auto companies do not know how to make cars that people want has been obscured by the fact that they’ve been forced to make cars fitting mandates offered by government, people in government who have never built a car, have never designed a car, have never marketed nor sold a car. Just get government out of their way, and then let ‘em sink or swim on their own. How is it that all three of them are up the creek? All three of them face the same onerous regulations.
What about oil prices and the effect on the price of a car and the mileage and the kind of car you want? Get Washington out of the way on that, not this phony bill that Nancy Pelosi ushered through the House. We can drill everywhere there isn’t oil now, and you know why they had to usher this through? ‘Cause they knew it was a losing issue for them. We had ‘em right between the eyes. We had ‘em right in the palm of our hands. They were on the incorrect side of this drill, drill, drill, right here, right now, business, so they usher through this stupid thing. It’s the same, the Gang of Ten, gang of 16, now gang of 20 in the Senate — oh, yeah, we’re going to allow drilling, we’re going to drill, drill, drill, but it’s gotta be further than 50 miles offshore. Most of the oil is closer than that, so Huge Oil has been told go ahead and invest and drill where there isn’t any oil, which they won’t do.

And if Ford et al. are so excellent at making cars, clarify to me how the Ford and Oldsmobile in my driveway are pieces of krap that break down constantly? I’m for a balance between capitalism and socialism, which is basically what we have right now. Total socialism just doesn’t work, and unchecked capitalism is a disaster. The financial crisis and high oil prices are both examples of what can happen if markets are not sufficiently regulated. Based on these two failures I have no problem with us moving a small more in the direction of socialism.
I am really waiting for the United Communist States of Americe… maybe next 4 years… until then Obama baby!

Toyota kicks our but precisely in the area of the higher environmental and fuel efficiency. Looks like you have it backwards – CAFE standards make companies more efficient, more reliable and they then make things like hybrid cars that do one better than the CAFE standards.
We do have a mixed economy where the government plays a larger role in the economy. That is hardly socialism. Governments have been playing large roles in their economies way before the term socialism was even invented. Or even the term communism.

What I find is astonishing, is Hillary, McCain and others pointed out to Obama you cannot raise the cap gains tax to 25-30%. Revenue decreases, you take capital out of the private sector, which makes real wealth, jobs. Obama admitted that is right but will raise it anyway, because it will appear to his supporters he is taxing the rich. Makes a lot of sense right?
Incidentally, I’m wondering when all these people who blamed Bush for high gas prices, are now going to give him credit for lowering them. No, he didn’t have anything to do with it either way, but honest is honest.
Anyone who doesn’t like social programs shouldn’t cash their social security check when they retire. they should "donate" it back to the governemt. Don’t go read in the library either. Social programs help people less fortunate than the majority and establish a safety net when a person fails. If that is incorrect then you my friend have no compassion for your fellow citizens
The key to understanding this is that the free market cannot be perfect, because the element that makes it up are people which are by nature imperfect and prone to miscalcualtions in judgement and thus error. But to herald the govt as the savior for free market failures is a huge mistake. I agree that govt should REMOVE itself from private sector business includiung retirement (social security), health care (medicare), mortgage (fannie & freddie rape) and everything else the govt has stuck their huge noses into. The free amrket will right itself much more quickly, because people in the private sect. have incentive versus a govt bureacrat that will not act on incentive but on demands and orders from a superior.
