Fixed rate mortgage and interest rates going low?

I have a fixed 5 year mortgage rate and few days ago my friend mentioned that because interest rates are so low at the moment it means Im overpaying and therefore it should wipe off a year or so of my mortgage. Is it right?? Im clueless in mortgage things …..
