how to claim grants on taxes?

Written By: aaren on November 28, 2009 2 Comments

I attended DeVry University and withdrew and am now attending Ohio State. But, when I withdrew from DeVry, they sent back my federal PELL grants to the government and DeVry MADE me pay them back. So essentially, it is like paying tuition. If DeVry does not send me a 1098-T statement saying I paid the grants back, which resulted in over 00, how do I claim the grants, if I can?

    find your papertrail.

If you claim an education benefit for the tuition you paid to DeVry and there is no 1098-T to back it up, the IRS will want copies of the paperwork showing how you paid it.
