Shopping for a home loan help where to look and about mortgage brokers?

I am gonna start shopping for a home loan for the 1st time. I am wondering how should I go about this, I know that any inquirys within a certain period of time count as one on ur credit score (does anyone one know what that time period is?) , so my plot was to do all my shopping within in a couple of days. But where should I look I thought of online sites like lendingtree, my personal bank, but what about a mortgage broker? If I go to a mortgage broker am I obligated to use their lending?
Im a small confused on how to shop around for a loan, ive chose to try my personal bank and a mortgage broker. So from what I under stand is I give them the paperwork, they run my credit and they tell me what they can offer me? And until I accept the loan from them Im not obligated to use them right?
