Want to go back to school, but not sure if I’m eligible for financial aid or grants?
I’m 23, live in Tennessee and have my GED. I’ve been wanting to go back to school for awhile now, but not sure where to start. I have filled out my FAFSA to see about grants/scholarships, etc. But I don’t think I’m eligible.
I made a little over $21,000 last year, and I live with my boyfriend. Between my bills & living necessities, I only have about $150 a month extra, and i know it’s not going to be enough to pay for school. Also, I’m not sure if I can work less to fit school into my schedule, and not suffer consequences financially.
Am I eligible for financial aid? Or are there any grants/scholarships I might be able to get? I’m planning on going for either Nursing or Teaching (have not decided yet).
Any advice would be appreciated, I’m really hoping to be in school by spring semester!

Should I give up a supplemental income I was promised (in writing) to help restore my supervisor’s budget?
Hi,
Here is my situation: I am a graduate student in Toronto, I hold a scholarship, I work off-campus (both because the employment could lead to excellent career opportunities after graduation, and because this frees a teaching assistantship position for a fellow student on-campus) for the same number of hours I would be allowed to work on-campus, and my supervisor had agreed to supplement my income for the whole duration of my studies (I have a written, signed commitment) if I were to join the team.
I have used my expected incomes (scholarship, work, and supplement income) to get a mortgage for a house.
Now, my supervisor found out that the team budget was not well managed and tries to convince me to give up the supplement income, otherwise all expenditures will have to be stopped until the next financial year⦠For my project, I think have will have only small expenditures, and they can be covered by small grants I have applied for (and those I am about to apply for). I am the only student who has actually applied for other grants in anticipation of minimizing the burden on my supervisor budget. My supervisor is only targeting me because I have multiple incomes, but it is not my fault if the budget was not well managed, if some students spent more than they were allowed to, and if other students do not have multiple incomes.
I do not want to appear selfish, but I do need the money. I had budgeted according to all expected incomes when I selected the house I could afford. And I am not yet willing to risk losing the biggest investment of my life⦠I believe that if some students spent to much money, all the team members (including myself) should pay the consequences equally, not a single individual targeted for its multiple incomes. If I were to accept, I would have to change my mortgage, and some fees would be associated to this financial manoeuvre (including additional interests on my mortgage). I would basically have to accumulate the debt that another student would be freed of. If other students have tighter budget, there are loans that are available for that purpose.
Here is my question: Do you think I should give up that supplement income to help restore the budget, and allow my supervisor to redistribute it to students who have lesser income (but who would be eligible for government loans)?
All your input would be greatly appreciated!
