Where can I find information about federal or state grants for home improvements?

Written By: aaren on June 7, 2009 4 Comments

On the radio this morning, in St. Louis, I heard that you can get federal or state grants (NOT a loan – they clarified) for home repairs by looking at economic grants. The woman said that the government has these grants because they provide work to people and improve communities. She said you don't have to have a low-income and that the only requirement is that you live in the house for at least two years (or go out within two years, something like that). I cannot find this information anywhere. Can anyone help direct me to the right website?

The US government does have grants of all kinds, but they are forever changing the rules as to whom can take advantage of each one. I don't know of a website that talks specifically about the grant you seek, but I do know of a government site that you can explore likely includes what you are looking for. Do me a favor and email me back if you find it!

I live in St. Louis. I have a friend who just got a grant from the city giving her 5,000 to place a staircase in her one tale home and open the attic up to include 2 bedrooms. As long as she stays in her home, for I reckon 2 years as you said, she doesn't have to pay it back. I do know that the process took a while but the wait was worth it. She also had to get contractors approved with the city before the work was done, and after.

I do not know the contact information to give you right this moment, but if you email me at n2cheyenne@yahoo.com, I will question her and email you back with the info.
