Why do liberals, and the democrats in general want the government to have more control over peoples lives?

Most democrats esp those who are running for president, want a larger government? Why do they complain that the republicans have given tax cuts for the rich, without defining what rich is? why do most want universal health care for everyone? I know the need to take care of people, but isn’t that what medicare and medicade for. Why punish people whose jobs offer haelthcare. I am a student of history and from everyyting I’ve read, the founding fathers wanted the citizens to be self reliant. I worked hard to get where I am today, and I do not need the government taking what I worked for and give to those who do not want to work for what they want, or need. People cannot say they do not have educational opprotunities, because thre are student loans, grants, and work programs that can help one to go to school if they wish. Do you hink the government, federal, state, and local should but out of ou ives?
no one has still answered what rich is. As far as school goes one answered that mommy and daddy did not pay for their school. Neither did mine. I worked 40hrs per week, and went to school full time. I know the need for government, but not why they want to have more control over peoples lives.

The liberals running for office are all about punishing success (as long as they can keep their loopholes) and controlling what the everyday person can have and do (as long as their privileges are maintained).

A right liberal such as Hillary Rotten Clinton, Kerry, Algore, Kennedy poses a serious threat to our freedom.

Because people that fall through the many many cracks in the US system and land on their face, like people who go postal, could have been helped, and the 20 victims that got shot at the post office could have been saved. Compare violent crime rates in other more socialist western countries to those of the US mr History. Personally I don’t mind paying to keep perilous people off the streets, or sick people in hospitals.

And mr. Gitrdone, just because the sticker in the back of your pickup window says ”he who dies with the most toys wins” doesn’t make it right. Being a better person in life, and having compassion for those who have it worse than you, makes you a winner.

Because we live in a society that if left to it’s own devices, would be enslaved to a corporate machine. Not that it’s not already.
you obviously don’t have a clue about the current education system. I’ve tried going back to end my degree, but since Bush took office he’s cut student funding so tuition is now sky high. And I can’t even get financial aid outside of a loan at around 8 percent. And I’m an independent student, mommy and daddy don’t pay for anything.
I agree with you on the self reliance thing, but there are people in our society that only care about money and will step on anyone to get it. This is why we have things like global warming, accounting scandals, embezzlement, inside trading etc. Having a regulation to keep these behaviors in check is a excellent thing.

Yes, but history has also taught us that once a government makes a new government job, they will never remove it, even if the job no longer needs to be done.

We already have "universal healthcare" for government employees, and do not fool yourself into thinking that you don’t pay for that. Many, many small businesses are closing due to the ever-increasing costs to do business and healthcare is one of the largest. And one of the reasons is that the government employee policies pay better than ever and the real costs are shoved onto the small businesses that try to offer healthcare to their employees.

Keep in mind that just because your current employer currently offers healthcare, it doesn’t mean they will continue to offer it at the level you expect. My small business is now facing the real, hard choice to cancel our healthcare plot that our family and our employees have. Our plot is barebones and it sucks, yet the cost has gone up 75% in 3 years. With next years increase it means the cost has doubled in 4 years, and that is following the doubling in the past 4 years.

As my business is manufacturing and selling to American manufacturers, our customers are closing their doors, filing bankruptcy and fading away into the night. We are trying everything in our power to bring in new customers, but there are NO new customers. We have to cut costs again and this is the one thing we have left that we can cut.

It sucks and meanwhile, as I send 30% of our YUCKY sales to various government units, it doesn’t seem honest. Apparently working Americans don’t deserve healthcare, and we sure as hell don’t have paid pensions, but the bulk of our money goes directly to pay government employees and their spouses for the rest of their lives. What makes "them" better than "us"?

Yes the government should butt the hell out, but they won’t. Due to pensions and benefits, the cost of running the government is doubling every 10 years or so. Which means the taxes we pay have to double every 10 years or so to keep up. What a mess.

I agree with you. It seems odd to me that the same bunch of folks that criticize the government for it’s inefficiency want to add more bureaucracy to it. The agencies that the Federal government has set up to help folks can barely get those functions done to their satisfaction and now they want to add more health care to that function?! Like him or not Bush wanted to help by giving groups that already provide help to the those that need it. But because those groups have religious affiliations the liberals balked at the thought. What to heck is incorrect with providing help to groups that already function and work in those areas that the Dems want the government to take over? They don’t get the credit! Selfish idiots.

We NEED government because we no longer have Joe Farmer down the road that we buy beef from and for whom we could hold accountable if our beef was tainted. We need to make lawas and have government investigators to inspect the factories that provide the meat.

Liberal democrats want a larger government / Republicans want to "shrink government down so small that we can drown in in a bathtub," (Reagan paraphrase).

Huge nonsense. Here’s the simplist explanation why this nonsense continues to be repeated until normal people are brainwashed to believe it:
    1) It’s somewhat right that liberals-Democrats hope for regulation to curb the excesses of corporate power, while conservatives-Republicans hope that government will let corporations do what they want — small or no regulation.
    2) It is in the best interest of the US media (the majority of which is controlled by as few as only 5 very large media corporations) to propagate the myth that conservatives "want to keep the govmt off the small guy’s back." The more conservatives are elected, the greater the freedom of the corporations. Villifying as huge government-lovers makes the conservatives look like champions of the common man (which is so far from the truth, it’s laughable).

Don’t buy this nonsense. I reckon it would be a cool research paper for a 10th-grader — go get data to support the claim that GW Bush has really increased the size of government since he’s been in office. Didn’t he start the Dept of Homeland Security?
